Section 80C: The Complete Deduction Guide for FY 2025-26
80C is India's most popular tax deduction — ₹1.5 lakh that can save up to ₹46,800 in taxes. But most people leave money on the table by choosing wrong instruments. Here's the full picture.
What Is Section 80C?
Section 80C of the Income Tax Act allows you to deduct up to ₹1,50,000 per year from your gross income, reducing your taxable income. At the 30% bracket, this saves up to ₹46,800 in taxes (including 4% cess).
This is available only under the old tax regime. If you've chosen the new regime, 80C deductions do not apply.

ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) funds have the:
- •Shortest lock-in (3 years vs 5-15 years for others)
- •Highest potential returns (12-15% historically)
- •Tax-efficient gains (LTCG at 12.5% above ₹1.25L after lock-in)
Example: ₹1.5 lakhs invested in ELSS every year for 10 years at 12% CAGR = ₹29.4 lakhs. Same amount in PPF = ₹20.7 lakhs.
Common 80C Mistakes
1. LIC as the primary 80C instrument
Traditional LIC endowment/money-back plans give 5-6% effective returns after premium allocation charges. You're better off buying a term insurance (₹500-1,000/month for ₹1 crore cover) and investing the remainder in ELSS.
2. Starting in March (last-minute panic)
Investing ₹1.5 lakhs as a lump sum in March misses rupee cost averaging and ties up funds. Spread it: ₹12,500/month via SIP in ELSS throughout the year.
3. Ignoring EPF contribution
Your EPF contribution (12% of basic) already counts toward 80C. Many salaried employees partially exhaust the ₹1.5L limit through EPF alone — plan accordingly.
4. Double-counting
Home loan principal repayment counts toward 80C, as do tuition fees for up to 2 children. Track all 80C sources before adding fresh investments.
Beyond 80C: Additional Deductions
Don't stop at 80C. Stack these additional deductions under the old regime:
| Section | Deduction | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| 80D | Health insurance premium | ₹25,000 (₹50,000 for senior parents) |
| 80CCD(1B) | NPS additional contribution | ₹50,000 (over and above 80C) |
| 24(b) | Home loan interest | ₹2,00,000 |
| 80E | Education loan interest | No limit, for 8 years |
| 80G | Donations to approved charities | 50-100% of donation |
| 80TTA | Savings account interest | ₹10,000 |
